Advice from our experts

On soft ground
For a freestanding pergola, the ideal solution is to pour a concrete footing for each post . A 30x30cm footing, 40cm deep, is generally sufficient to ensure solid anchoring (approximately 90kg per post). Then, attach the pergola to the footings using the provided inserts. A less invasive alternative is to use galvanized or stainless steel foundation screws . These screws, over 50cm long, provide reliable anchoring depending on the compaction of your soil. In this case, you will need to purchase suitable fixing bolts.

On a wooden terrace
If your deck rests on pedestals, unscrew the boards at the post locations and drill holes to allow the posts to pass through. Attach the posts directly to the underlying concrete slab, then replace the boards around them for a clean finish. If your pergola doesn't have a roof, you can attach it directly to the wooden boards. In this case, be sure to place a waterproofing membrane under the base plates , especially if the boards are not made of exotic wood, to prevent any risk of rot .

Load capacity
Before installation, ensure your deck can support the weight of the pergola. For a wooden deck, this means checking the strength of the main beams and foundation . On a concrete deck, check the condition of the concrete and any embedded metal reinforcement .
